The International singer Bryan White, who sang and popularized the theme song of the AlDub Love team "God Gave Me You" at the height of AlDub love team in the Kalye Serye segment of the noontime show Eat Bulaga. What are the reasons of this OFW why they won’t be home for Christmas? Find out here!

The Christmas is near. Just like other Overseas Filipino Workers, (OFW) I, excited to go home too just to celebrate my Christmas with my beloved family and friends. But the news about the two-week suspension of issuance of new Overseas Employment Certificate (OEC's), or exit passes broke me and the other OFW's. Many OFW's have been prevented from leaving and maybe lost their job. This made me think about again to buy that expensive return ticket: SIN-MNL-SIN. For almost seven years, I'm working legally in Singapore as a direct hire. My work is to hire someone without going through an employment agency. Currently, it is prohibited by Section 123 of the 2016 Philippine Overseas Employment Administration(POEA) Rules. It is certain that there are exceptions, but these rely on Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III's judgment.

Is it not a bad obstacle? Is the labor secretary reading many requests for OEC exemption often? Is it too much to ask? And what does the other do while waiting for him to settle the issue? None, just waiting and praying that he came back to his senses until he understands that there is much more way to take care of Filipinos who worked overseas. They changed the rules last year that's why I do not apply for new OECs as long as I work for the same company. But when the time that I will find a great opportunity and want to change an employer, I need to apply a new OEC or whatsoever that POEA will require. What scares me is: If I will go back for Christmas, I possibly lose my job and the entire world I spent years building overseas. The new POEA rule might change everything that it might prevent me from leaving. By all means, there is a workaround: I could simply lie. I could claim that I, myself is a tourist and pay the travel taxes. They would not dare to lessen my right to travel, would they?

Last time, as I remember at Ninoy Aquino International Airport as I stood up in the immigration queue. I saw a domestic helper grabbing tidily their arranged documents greatly. Their hand shook as they reach the immigration officer; who would think that he had the power to decide if the "Kasambahay" will leave or not. I wanted to talk to them and said them to be chill, that it was just a basic right to travel and follow what they think is right to have a better life.However, I keep my mouth shut and minded my own business. Just like everyone in that appropriate OFW line, I, myself wanted to get out there with no problem. But the question is: Why do our "Kababayan" is scared to the immigration officer even though they have complete requirements? Because "offloading" is not unusual. An OFW can be stopped from leaving. At that point, you have to buy again a new ticket to get on another flight. Even the legitimate tourist are conditional to this unfair treatment. I would appreciate seeing improved and more realistic rules resolve by the POEA. I see how Bello's order protect OFWs from abuses. In addition, all-encompassing guidelines such as banning direct hires, with unclear exceptions, is a waste of time, effort, and resources.

I recognize Filipinos who work in multinational banks as a vice president. I honestly disbelief that these folks, even a lowly IT consultants for a global company just like myself, would use an employment agency's help to resolve an employment issue. The government would be improved off analyzing existing agencies that deploy domestic helpers and charge unreasonable fees that they have to pay over a lot of months - over SG$1,000. Let me correct that out: The POEA requires these respectful helpers to work for months just to pay agency fees. Is not a form of legalized, modern-day slavery. Back to my problem, should I come back home to Christmas and danger the possibility that if I go back overseas I would lose my job? Or should I just said to my mother that I will not be home for Christmas, her birthday, New Year's Day, just like in the previous three years? The danger of being cornered in my own country because of POEA rules changing is very nervous? We will have to be fulfilled with virtual hugs for a fourth year.

Additional Php 1.1-B funds, DOLE requested for the preparation, in case of the return of OFWs in some countries in the Middle East!

The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) are requesting an additional P1.1 Billion funds in the Congress for 2018 for those Overseas Filipino Workers(OFW), who are coming back to the Philippines due to the tensions that formed in Qatar, Lebanon, and Saudi Arabia. Labor Secretary Silvestre Bello III announced at the bicameral conference committee meeting on Thursday at Kamara de Representantes in relation to the dole funds they are doing under the 2018 General Appropriation Act.

According to Bello on the reporters,

"You are aware of the situation in Qatar in relation with their diplomatic relations with the Middle East countries and also in the case of Lebanon and in Saudi [Arabia]. Our labor attache there needs some contingency plans which may have to be implemented in case the situation worsens." 

Bello added that

"Pero right now, hindi pa naman kritical kung hindi mayroon lang cause to prepare for this plan,"

According to Bello, a total of 240,000 OFWs are in Qatar today. An additional P200 to 300 million will be allocated to reintegration program, while the P850 million funds will be used for expenses only if repatriation is required. As stated by Bello, he said that

"If you bring them back, we cannot afford to leave them unassisted. So we will have to provide them with initial financial assistance and then also livelihood."

Bello added that

"Kung hindi naman [umuwi], kagaya ng our experience sa Saudi, marami sa kanila opted to stay notwithstanding the situation. Pero we have to prepare for that eventuality." 

Bello is hoping that the Senador of Kamara will give be given the additional funds as Bello request. Bello said,

"Hindi sila umo-oo, pero hindi rin naman sila himi-hindi. So may pag-asa."

Good News: A Former Overseas Filipino Worker (OFW) became a "Hero Farmer"!

Many of our countrymen try to find a good job abroad and they strive to do anything to have a better future for their family. A farmer had decided to go abroad to have a stable job in abroad to sustain the needs of his family. But all the OFW's are not forever in abroad, so he decided to return back to his own country for good. He was featured in the late night news Bandila of the ABS-CBN and his name is Johnny Gatus. He wants to prove that there will be a good future in farming in spite of becoming an OFW. The story of the hero farmer in San Rafael Bulacan featured in the segment of Bandila X-tra. As a farmer, he shared the important requirement to be successful. The former OFW, Johnny Gatus shared

"Number 1 na kailangan ay ang kalidad ng binhi na gagamitin, may variety sya na matibay, malakas ang production nya, malakas mamunga. Hindi ko pinababayaan ang mga tauhan ko. Saisang ektaryang lupa kelangan po ng atleast 2-3 helper, pagka panahon ng tag-ani nagdadagdag po ako ng mga 4-5. Sila po ang mga tao sa paligid. Nandito na ang source ko ng tao,meron naman akong capital na kaya nag renta po ako ng panibago para tuloy tuloy ang kita ko, tuloy ang trabaho ng tao baka kung ako ay wala na, o kaya ay di ko na kaya magsaka, Sila yung magpapatuloy ng ginagawa ko."

He concluded that even in a 1 hectare of farmland there will be a good future for his family. He foresees that number people are escalating, e need more supplies of food. He also requested the assistance of the government agencies for the processing of the harvested food and vegetables, so that they will continue to work and farm for the benefits of the people.Thre must be a certain place and buyers that will but their goods and harvest vegetables from their farmland. The Product Manager of East-West Seed Company, Michael Dela Paz acknowledge and give honors to the Hero farmer like John Gatus a former OFW, all over the country. He added

"Kada isang farmer ay hero, bakit kamo kasi sila ang nagpapakain sa atin, yung selflessness, ibig sabihin yung talagang willingness kung kelangan para makatulong sa mga kapwa farmer.Gusto natin ang farmer ay isang modelo, yung respetado sa kanyang komunidad."

Johnny Gatus encouraged other OFW if they have a chance to engage in farming there is a chance to have a profit same as their salary or more in abroad.
