Nakita nila ang mga lumang kahon na ito sa kweba at nang mabuksan nila ay hindi nila inaasahan na ito ang bubungad sa kanila

During the late 19th century, a team of loggers arrived at the large and mysterious Mt. Pulag which is located in a massive and wonderful jungle of the Philippines where they discovered a series of hidden caves waiting for them. There's definitely something unsettling about the caves but it still remains intact today and beautiful as it may look. Some of us could say that the eeriness to come that the "sea of clouds" hovering around the mountain where they were located serve as a clue of it. Each of the caves is only available through narrow, winding paths and rickety footbridges beside the mountain. It looks like it was something out of an Indiana Jones film in many different ways.

They'll uncover something very creepy once the brave explores step inside the mysterious caves. But rest assured that it's clearly a real deal because the entire area might look like a movie set. If they are taken there by a tour guide, those brave enough to examine the terrifying cave system can only reach the inside.

The locals likely didn't want anyone to see because the caves themselves cover a horrifying mystery. Inside the caves, there are wooden boxes which each of them has a mummy inside. Yes, you heard it right. As a matter of fact, long before the mummies d1ed, there are actually some of the corpses had started the mummification process.

These frightening and interesting c*rpses are identified as the Fire Mummies or Ibaloi Mummies which they were known to the tribe to which they belonged. Way back to 2000 BC where the unusual mummification method date. The person who was dy1ng would drink an very salty drink when it was becoming obvious that a person was approaching d3ath.

And this will be the start of the mummification process. A person would be washed up and placed in a seated position and then put above a flame after the sick person d1ed. Instead of becoming cremated and burning into ash, this method was practiced in such a process so that the corpse would dry out.

Some members of the tribe would also present to the ritual through blowing tobacco smoke into the late tribe member's mouth, which they thought would help their deceased loved one's insides dry out more immediately. However, it took few weeks to finish the entire process. But being in such an essential ritual in the society, it had to be done with a great care, that may look like a uniquely long time to work with a d3ad body.

The remains were dried out as it could probably be, once each of the bodies was completely mummified, the members of the tribe then rolled it up so it took up as small as possible. The mummy would be tucked into a wooden box. One individual buried alone although families were buried together. After Christian explorers arrived from Spain and forced their own religion and burial practice, the Ibaloi people place this practice to an end sometime in the 1500s.

That may be the reason why the caved remains intact for centuries. A group of loggers moved into the area and found out the mummies inside nearly 300 years later, but they didn't respect the remains the way that they should be treated.

However, the cave and each of the things that were inside called a National Culture Treasure by the government of the Philippines. Unluckily, plenty of which were already sold on the black market because people didn't stop sneaking and stealing some of the mummies on the site. This shown main difficulty for scientists and historians who were wishing to examine the caves. One of those stolen was the mummy tribal chief named Appu Annu.

His cave had undergone damaged by that time, though his body was returned in the 1990s. A lot of people think that the reason of the damaged was a curse. However, there are still some mummies that remain in the Mt. Pulag in this day. Most people think that they were also have been part of the deity and they took the curse while they were human. A lot of people are still trying to have the correct location of the cave a mystery from the public.

It's mostly to evade any additional violence of the approximately 80 remaining mummies. The United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) are now considered the cave as a World Heritage Site. A lot of the descendants of the mummies still visits there to perform rituals. And if some travelers were brave enough they were also going there together with a right tour guide.
